Cabinet Hardware 101
Hardware is a simple yet powerful way to transform your space.
Whether I’m swapping dated hardware for something new or picking cabinet hardware for a brand-new space, the right hardware adds so much to the overall design. However, when the hardware is poorly placed or has wonky functionality, it can make an otherwise amazing space look off. That’s why I’ve decided to pull together a few small tricks for making sure I pick and place my hardware correctly. Here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way to make the process easier and ensure my space looks polished and functional.
Knobs vs. Pulls in the Kitchen
Traditionally knobs are used for cabinet doors and pulls are used on cabinet drawers however these days anything goes. You will often see people using knobs for drawers for consistency or based on the size of the drawers. Of course you often see pulls being used on cabinet doors as well so it really is a personal preference.
How Many Drawer Pulls: One or Two?
How many knobs and pulls you use will depend on whether you have wide drawers or small drawers. If your drawers are 24'' wide or greater, double up on knobs or pulls. You can also consider using a larger pull that covers more of the drawer front, only requiring you to install one rather than two.
What are the choices available for materials?
When considering materials for your hardware, there are many options available, such as glass, wood, and ceramic pulls. However, there are four primary materials you’ll commonly choose from: black, nickel, bronze, and brass. These materials are often available in various finishes, including polished, matte, antique, oil-rubbed, brushed, and unlacquered. It's best to select these in person to ensure they match the finishes in your space. If you’re ordering online, visit a hardware store first to get a sense of the look and feel of the finishes.
